New look Water Park opens ahead of schedule

Townsville families rejoice! The Strand Water Park has reopened today more than two months ahead of schedule.

Featuring new slides, a full range of new water play equipment, soft fall, landscaping, shade structures, lighting and formalised seating, the park was officially reopened this morning to the delight of a group of children from a nearby daycare centre.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said she was thrilled to see the facility, which recycles its water through an underground filtration system, open ahead of schedule and in time for this weekend’s T150 air and sky show.

“The Water Park has always been one of Townsville’s most loved attractions and I am very pleased to see it back in action today,” Cr Hill said.

“We’ve spent a lot of time listening to our community to make this transformation one that reflects the best of what parents said they would like to see. More shade, more seating and a better design to keep kids away from the road are some examples.

“Youngsters may also like to know that the iconic Big Bucket is back and is bigger than ever with 1000 litres dumping every five minutes. Now that’s a serious drenching!”

Cr Hill said construction crews had worked in combination in an effort to see the project completed ahead of time with up to seven crews on the job at any one time.

“I’m told the Air Show was a major motivating factor for those involved in the build who wanted to see the park open for the big day.”

The $2.8 million project features also features new slides and a dedicated toddler play area.

Divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said landscaping had been upgraded while additional seating and lighting has also been installed. A new fence has been designed to reduce the risk of children running to the road.

“The Strand is a wonderful asset for the city and great facilities like the water park are a big reason why families enjoy it so much,” Cr Greaney said.

“The new look park will be an important part of our Strand and city for years to come.”

The Water Park is open from 10am each day. It is closed Tuesdays except during school holidays. The park’s underground filtration system cleans and recycles the water used to ensure minimum wastage and maximum water efficiency.
