Stanley St to close for stormwater pipe repair

Date published: 28 October 2016

Stanley Street will be closed in both directions from Monday after CCTV footage identified the failed brick stormwater pipe, which gouged a large hole underneath the road, will need to be replaced.

Council crews sent the mobile camera along around 30 metres of the pipe that traverses Stanley Street - between Walker and Wills Streets - this morning.

Townsville City Council Infrastructure Committee chairman Cr Mark Molachino said the hole, likened to the size of a backyard swimming pool, would be stabilised with backfill today before work to replace the pipe commenced early next week.

The hole was discovered yesterday afternoon during works for the CBD Utilities Upgrade project.

“Pictures back from the camera this morning show parts of the pipe that are still underground are also in poor shape,” Cr Molachino said.

“A decision has been made to close this portion of Stanley Street from Monday for about a week to enable a complete repair.

“This is not something we’d expect but it’s important to remember the infrastructure here is up to 80 years old.

“An incident like this highlights just why the CBD Utilities Upgrade is so important.”

Project Manager Simon Ormes said traffic management would be in place for the duration of the closure with detours at Wills Street and restricted access through the Stanley and Walker Street intersection to allow for the substantial excavation works.

“We are very mindful of the need to maintain access for businesses and to create temporary routes to keep traffic flowing through the CBD as best we can around the work site,” Mr Ormes said.

“We’re running on time for this part of the project so I’m confident that this closure and extra repair won’t affect our timelines.”
