CBD utilities project moves to new Walker Street phase

The CBD Utilities Upgrade project activity will move further up Stanley St, to the Walker Street intersection on Wednesday.

Detours and restricted access at the intersection will be in place to allow for substantial excavation works.

Work at the intersection will take about 6 weeks to complete. The crew will then continue up Stanley Street towards Wills Street.

Council’s Water and Waste Committee chairman Cr Paul Jacob said the Stanley Street works were on schedule, and a single lane of through traffic access through this intersection to the lower part of Stanley Street opened this week for drivers.

“There will be significant changes to traffic conditions at this intersection during this period, and the works are in conjunction with the existing works activity in Stanley Street,” Cr Jacob said.

“A large bulk water pipeline is being installed, which next month will be laid up the hill to Wills Street. Drivers should take care with the changed traffic conditions and follow directional signage and detours where necessary.”

The CBD Utilities Upgrade project is also working its way along the northern side of Sturt St, between Stanley and Stokes St, to install water reticulation pipework.

Excavation work along Flinders St West is approaching 70 per cent completion, and the under bore drilling of Ross Creek is now complete.

“Our CBD is still very much open for business and we encourage people to continue to support local businesses.”

Director of Townsville Water Keith Parsons said project team members were on site every day making contact with business operators, property owners, transport providers and the public to provide advance notice of works activities and to minimise impacts as much as possible.

“Traffic management in the CBD is changing frequently as the works progress. We are always focused on the need to maintain access for businesses and to create temporary routes to keep traffic flowing through the CBD as best we can around the work site,” Mr Parsons said. The works along Stanley St are being staged to minimise impacts on business and retain traffic flow through the centre of the city.
