Night works keep Utilities project rolling

Date published: 26 September 2016

Night works as part of the CBD Utilities Upgrade will commence this week in order to minimise disruption to CBD traffic, workers and businesses.

The works, outside the Chef’s Carvery, on the corner of Sturt and Stanley Streets, and on Stokes Street adjacent to Woolworths and Bambini Café, will run from 6pm to 5am nightly, commencing Monday 26 September.

Townsville City Council Infrastructure Committee Chairman Cr Mark Molachino said the work would involve connecting and activating a new water pipeline along Sturt and Stokes Street.

Activity such as concrete cutting will be restricted to the hours of 6pm and 10pm to limit disruption to nearby premises. A vacuum truck to recover excavation waste will also be used at the Sturt and Stanley Street works.

On Stokes Street, the water main will be installed using underbore directional drilling beneath the footpath as an alternative to excavating a trench. This will mean the pedestrian footpath can remain open.

“Ensuring we keep disruption to a minimum is a big priority but a certain level of noise is unavoidable,” Cr Molachino said.

“Conducting these works at night will ensure pedestrian access can be maintained to the adjoining businesses and that they can continue to trade as usual during the day.

“Businesses and residential complexes in the works area have all been advised of the upcoming works.”

Metal plates and some fencing will be placed over pedestrian walkways during trading hours while work is underway to ensure safety.

“The project team understands the need to reopen footpaths, parking bays and traffic lanes as soon as sections of work are completed.”

People are encouraged to call the project team on 0408 972 536 with any concerns.
