Major drainage upgrade set to commence on Ingham Rd

Townsville City Council will begin work on Monday to increase the stormwater drainage capacity in West End with the installation of pipes under Ingham Rd.
New stormwater drainage pipes will be installed under the Greer Street/Ingham Rd intersection, requiring significant changes to traffic conditions for up to eight weeks.
The inbound lane of Ingham Road from Church Street to Sturt Street will be closed for the duration of the work. It is strongly recommended that inbound traffic from the northern suburbs access the city via Woolcock Street.
Local traffic access will be maintained on Ingham Rd for local businesses, West End residents and teachers and students at the Townsville West State School.
General inbound traffic will be diverted at Church Street onto the Ingham Service Road, exiting at Sturt Street where traffic conditions will be modified to allow for the changed traffic movement.
Infrastructure Committee chairman Cr Mark Molachino said the work was essential to renew and expand the ageing drainage network in West End which was a major collection point for storm water from Castle Hill.
“The work in West End is continuing the council’s upgrades of the drainage networks in the city’s older suburbs where underground drainage is ageing and in need of renewal,” Cr Molachino said.
“Works in Greer Lane and along Ingham Road will greatly improve the capacity of the local network to capture and discharge storm water in major rainfall events away from residents and businesses into the nearby canal system.
“The council has liaised closely with all business operators on Ingham Road and staff will continue to minimise any impacts on them, commuters and residents.
“Local access will be maintained but I would urge motorists who use Ingham Road as a thorough fare to the city to look at taking an alternative route while these works are underway.”
Pedestrian footpaths and property access will be maintained during this section of the works. Safety fencing will be installed for pedestrians and vehicles.. There will be no access from Ingham Road to Greer Street. Access for local traffic will be via Pridmore Street.
The installation of the pipes will be followed by road works that will involve new kerb and channel work, laying primer seal, asphalting and replacement of the line marking.
