Flinders Lane project steps forward

A key milestone has been reached on Townsville City Council’s Flinders Lane project today.
The Flinders Lane project is part of the Townsville 2020 master plan – which provides a clear vision for our city and provides the private sector with confidence to invest and create jobs.
Flinders Lane will become a critical pedestrian link between the Bus Hub and the CBD and the project will provide an opportunity for commercial opportunities such as cafes, retail shops or even a small bar.
Council purchased the old Sports Power building on Flinders St last year. The building will be demolished to allow a new laneway precinct to be developed.
Council today voted to delegate authority to Council’s CEO Adele Young to enter into negotiations with the neighbouring building owner to secure a ground lease – which would allow a wider laneway and more commercial opportunities.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the Townsville 2020 master plan clearly showcases the vision for Townsville’s future.
“Whether it’s enlivening the CBD through projects such as Flinders Lane or building a new water park at Riverway, Council is committed to delivering world-class infrastructure throughout our community,” Cr Hill said.
“This is an exciting project because it will work in tandem with the Bus Hub to encourage more people in our city heart.
“Flinders Lane will be a win for public transport users and CBD traders.”
Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the Townsville 2020 vision was gaining momentum.
“Flinders Lane is just one of a number of projects being worked on by Council at the moment,” Cr Walker said.
“In the coming months the community can expect to be updated on the lagoon, master planning of the Riverway water park, the Castle Hill concept plan and Mount Louisa activation.
“This is a really exciting time as Council is planning for our city’s future. We want to ensure all residents have access to top-level experiences right throughout our community.”
Cr Walker said Flinders Lane was another Council-led initiative to encourage more people into the CBD.
“Council is investing in creating street art trails, establishing 15-minute free parking and soon work will start on turning Flinders Lane from an empty building into the city’s next laneway precinct,” Cr Walker said.
“There’s a lot of work happening in and around the CBD and Flinders Lane is another important project that will help transform our city heart.”
