Mayor encourages local businesses to register for defence works

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill is encouraging local businesses to register and get involved in the Defence contract for the upcoming Greenvale Training Area.
Small businesses are being invited to apply to secure some of the initial works preparing the site that forms part of the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI).
Cr Hill said this is an important opportunity for local companies to get involved in a major project likely to shape North Queensland’s defence capabilities.
“I would like to commend the Department of Defence for offering small businesses a chance to get involved in such a major program for our region,” Cr Hill said.
“Townsville is Australia’s largest garrison city and we have a strong relationship with the Defence Force – it’s fitting that our local businesses have a role to play in this.
“The Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative will see $2.2 billion invested into regional Queensland – including Townsville – which is fantastic for the local economy.”
Cr Hill said the acquisition and early works are suited to many Townsville businesses.
“Townsville has a number of local businesses that can assist in the early works – it may be assisting with boundary fencing or signage or it could be removal of old materials and infrastructure,” Cr Hill said.
“The best way to find out if your business can get involved is to jump on the Department of Defence’s website and fill out the capability statement.
“I’d really encourage Townsville businesses to go fill the statement out, it’s a great chance to gain new experience.”
The ASMTI is expected to bring up to 14,000 Singapore personnel to Townsville for 18 weeks a year for 25 years.
