Magnetic Island a winner in Council’s 2021/22 Budget

Townsville City Council’s 2021/22 Budget includes an investment of $13.8 million for the region’s much-loved Magnetic Island.
Mayor Jenny Hill said this year’s Budget demonstrated Council’s commitment to investing in continued enhancements for the jewel in the crown of the city.
“We are so lucky to have such a beautiful island just a short distance off our coast, but these sorts of assets require significant investment to ensure they remain a great place to live and visit,” she said.
“We have listened to the residents and local businesses of Magnetic Island and will be undertaking some significant work over the next 12 months to address some of the things people have been asking for.
“The 2021/22 Budget includes $13.8 million for a variety of projects on the island, ranging from renewal of water and wastewater assets to road projects and community infrastructure.”
Cr Hill said $7.7 million would be spent rehabilitating and upgrading Horseshoe Bay Road between Armand Way and Pacific Drive and installing new guardrails and warning signs.
“More than $1 million will go towards various water supply projects on the island, including the upgrade of the Bolger Bay pump station, while $1 million will be invested in wastewater network upgrades and renewals,” Cr Hill said.
“The budget also includes $760,000 for the Nelly Bay pedestrian link, which will join the Picnic Bay track and X Base Track.
“Council will also upgrade the public amenities in Horseshoe Bay and on Yule Street in Picnic Bay, install a new drinking fountain in Alma Bay Park and replace the barbecue in Lions Park in Nelly Bay.”
The sports court in Horseshoe Bay Sport and Recreation Reserve will be reinstated at a cost of $300,000 while $1 million will be invested undertaking restoration works at Nelly Bay.
