Clean up backyard, make home disaster-ready now: Mayor

Townsville residents are being urged to clean up their properties now to be more resilient during the high-risk weather season.

North Queensland has an increased risk of natural disasters like storms and cyclones from November to April.

Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said it was important every resident took the time to tidy up around their home now.

“Life in the tropics comes with the reality of natural disasters like flooding, storms, cyclones and bushfires, so it’s important to make sure your house and backyard are in the best condition possible to withstand any natural hazards,” Cr Dametto said.

“I’m asking residents to make sure they take the time to trim your trees and any overhanging branches, clean your gutters and downpipes, store loose furniture and items away and find out how to turn off your mains supply for gas, water and electricity to your property.

“It’s also really important to keep up regular maintenance around your home, repair any corrosion around your house, particularly inside the roof, and replace any rotten or termite-infested timber.

“And in the case of a natural disaster, it’s important to make sure your insurance policy is current and to know which types of events you are covered for.”

Cr Dametto said residents should always have a plan ready to go in the case of a severe weather event or natural disaster.

“Knowing your risks for your property and having an emergency plan for your household – including your pets – is vitally important. Council has a household emergency plan template available online to help you make your plan,” he said.

“Preparing an emergency kit is essential, so make sure you have one prepared now and in a designated space in your home. This kit should include three days’ food, medicine and supplies, including for babies, small children and pets.

“You don’t have to figure out what to do by yourself. Council has plenty of information available, including step-by-step guides on what to do before, during and after a disaster. You can find this information by jumping onto the Emergency Management and Disaster Dashboard and clicking ‘Get Ready Townsville’ to find out more.”
