Secure your pets ahead of NYE shenanigans

Townsville will come alive this New Year’s Eve with spectacular fireworks set to light up the night sky - but before we celebrate, Townsville City Council is reminding pet owners to plan for their furry friends.
Mayor Nick Dametto said a few simple steps can make a big difference for pets during fireworks festivities, and can help avoid the flurry of lost and found pets notices typically posted across online channels the following day.
“Fireworks are exciting for us, but they can be stressful for cats and dogs who tend to get set off by the loud noises and bright lights, and as a result panic and try to escape,” Cr Dametto said.
“Distressed pets who escape can run into trouble with traffic or can take off at a rate that they end up totally lost and disorientated and unable to find their way home – no one wants this for their four-legged friends.”
Councillor Dametto urged pet owners to think ahead.
“If you’re heading out for the evening, make sure you have your pets secured safely at home,” he said.
“Set up a quiet space before the fireworks start; a laundry, bathroom, or a crate if they’re trained can help them feel safe, or if they are located outside make sure your fence is secure.
“If your pet does get out, having up-to-date microchip details and a collar with ID means we can reunite you quickly.
“It’s a simple step that makes a huge difference.”
Townsville’s fireworks will light up Riverway and The Strand at 8pm, and The Strand and Magnetic Island at midnight on Tuesday, 31 December.
