TLDMG remains at Alert as flood watch continues

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group will remain at Alert as a flood watch continues for North Queensland due to a slow-moving monsoon trough making its way down the Queensland coast.
TLDMG Chair Nick Dametto said the Local Disaster Management Group is following the advice of the BoM closely and monitoring the situation for any potential changes.
“According to the BoM’s advice, the coming rainfall is expected to be slow-moving between Ingham and Cairns from today,” Cr Dametto said.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible for the Townville area, with heavy rainfall expected tonight, rivers are rising, however at this stage there is no imminent threat to property.”
Councillor Dametto reminded the community that preparation was essential during the unpredictable nature of a North Queensland wet season.
“As we all well know, weather can shift and there are still some uncertainties,” Cr Dametto said.
“We’re urging residents to stay informed and be prepared for whatever mother nature throws our way as severe weather approaches.
“There is no need to panic, but please review your emergency plan, have your emergency kit ready, know your flood zone and be prepared to leave if required.”
The community can stay informed via Council’s Disaster Dashboard, the Townsville Disaster Information Facebook page, local radio, and official channels.
Councillor Dametto said to assist the community with preparations, sand and sandbags were available at five locations across Townsville:
- Lou Litster Park – Railway Estate
- Bruce Hwy & Mount Low Parkway – Mount Low
- Bluewater Community Centre – Bluewater
- Cungulla SES Depot – Cape Cleveland
- Ross Dam Park, Kelso
“I want to remind our community it will be wet out there; I know emotions are heightened, but please make sure you’re staying informed and acting with a level head, especially out on our roads,” he said.
“Remember if it’s flooded, forget it, and for non-life-threatening emergencies, call SES on 132 500, or 000 for anything life threatening.
