Dametto sworn in as city's 48th Mayor

Former Member for Hinchinbrook and advocate for Townsville and North Queensland, Nick Dametto has officially taken a declaration of office, being sworn in by Townsville City Council Chief Executive Officer Joe McCabe in a special Council meeting today.

Mr Dametto was elected by the voters of Townsville in the recent Mayoral by-election which was completed by postal vote on 15 November 2025.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland officially declared Mr Dametto the Mayor Elect on 19 November.

Mayor Nick Dametto's name will be etched in the history books as the 48th Mayor of the City of Townsville, taking on the role as the city's Mayor ahead of the next local Government election in 2028.

Townsville Chief Executive Officer Joe McCabe welcomed the new Mayor during the declaration of office and said while it was a new era of leadership for the city, the organisation would continue to work towards delivering excellent services while growing Townsville.

"Congratulations to Mr Dametto, I very much look forward to working with a tireless advocate for the region as we work towards growing this great city we get to call home," Mr McCabe said.

Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto thanked those who had supported him and said he we extremely proud to be the 48th Mayor of Townsville.

"As a boy who grew up in Ingham and someone who has come from a trade background, I am not averse to rolling up my sleeves to get the job done,” Mr Dametto said.

“Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of working in the sugar industry, mining and tourism, as well as representing North Queensland in State Parliament, and now that I am sworn in as Mayor, it’s time to get to work for Townsville.

“As Mayor of this great city, I can’t wait to bring pride and prosperity back to Townsville.

“I now have two years to deliver what most would be afforded four, this means I’ll be sparing no time when it comes to bringing the Council, all levels of government and the relevant stakeholders together to fast-track policy and projects I spoke of during my campaign. It’s time to get Townsville back on track.”
