Picnic Bay ‘loo with a view’ officially opens

Picnic Bay’s foreshore has received a vibrant upgrade with the completion of a new architecturally designed public amenities block, replacing the more than 40-year-old structure with a modern, accessible facility that reflects the natural beauty of Magnetic Island.
Acting Mayor and divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the new amenities were a welcome improvement for the community and visitors alike.
“The old toilet block on Yule Street has been out of action for some time, so it’s terrific to see the temporary demountable gone and this great-looking, permanent structure now in place,” Cr Greaney said.
“This project has been a long time coming, and we’re grateful to the State Government for supporting it through the Works for Queensland program.”
The new facility not only meets modern accessibility standards, but also features a striking mural by artist Gema Fernandez Cabezas, titled ‘Maggie’. The artwork celebrates the island’s unique character and adds a vibrant splash of colour to the new structure.
“Gema’s mural is a beautiful tribute to Magnetic Island and really brings the building to life. It’s more than just a toilet block — it’s now a piece of public art,” Cr Greaney said.
The new public amenities block has been funded by the State Government through the Works for Queensland program.
Member for Townsville Adam Baillie MP said the project was vital to boosting the liveability within the community.
“Supporting councils to deliver vital infrastructure is at the heart of the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to Queenslanders,” Mr Baillie said.
“It’s why we made the Works for Queensland program a permanent funding program, backing councils to deliver for communities just like this.”
“This government is proud to be able to support Council to investment in critical infrastructure and deliver these facilities.”
The original amenities, built in the 1980s, had reached the end of their life and were no longer functional or compliant with modern standards. Council consulted with the community through its Have Your Say platform, receiving 241 submissions, with a strong majority supporting the decision to upgrade the facility at its existing location.
“We thank the island community for their input and patience throughout the process, as well as the State Government for their contribution through the Works for Queensland program,” Cr Greaney said.
The project was delivered by local contractor Jackson Semler.
