Council issues call-out for next generation of apprentices and trainees
Date published: 18 September 2025
A city-wide call-out has been issued to secure the next cohort of apprentices and trainees needed to build, grow, and maintain future Townsville.
Townsville City Council (TCC) earlier this month launched its annual Apprenticeships and Traineeships recruitment campaign, offering 23 exciting opportunities for local people to kickstart their career in 2026.
With a range of roles offered across diverse areas such as business, animal care and electrical, this annual program plays a vital role in building our future workforce and supporting the region’s young talent.
Third-year TCC fitting and turning apprentice Campbell Johnston said he recommended the opportunity to anyone seeking a supportive and exciting entry in the workforce.
“I am definitely enjoying it – the crews are awesome, the work’s really fun and it’s always different so it keeps you on your toes,” he said.
“Fitting and turning is such a wide variety of work, we do anything from pulling pumps apart to re-building pump stations and wells.
“There’s a fair bit of work we have to nail at TAFE, and Council’s definitely very understanding of that.
“Each TAFE block is very different – it can be just a week of straight book work, and the next can be a week of working with machines that you haven’t used before; it’s very interesting.
“I personally love going to TAFE and learning all the different ways of doing things.”
Townsville Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the apprentice and trainee program would help bolster technical skills and trade workforce capacity across the city.
Cr Greaney said TCC was one of the city’s largest employers.
“Council understands it has a social responsibility to train the next generation of qualified employees that our city needs, and we are proud to be a leading centre of education and training in the North,” she said.
“At Council, there is so much diversity across our areas of expertise meaning we offer a wide range of experience for anyone seeking to complete a trade qualification or a traineeship.
“We are encouraging anyone looking to get their foot in the door towards a really fulfilling career to take a look at what Council has on offer.”
Applications to join Council’s apprentice and trainee program for 2026 are open now and close on Monday October 6.
