Council bleeds for national cause

Townsville City Council staff are rolling up their sleeves once again, joining almost 300 councils nationwide in Lifeblood’s 2026 Local Government Blood Drive.
Mayor Nick Dametto said Council was proud to support a national initiative that delivered life‑saving outcomes, while also encouraging a strong culture of community among staff.
“As one of the city’s largest employers, Council has a real opportunity to make a difference, particularly here in Townsville where plasma donations play such a critical role,” Cr Dametto said.
“This is about leading by example. Council staff have always been prepared to roll up their sleeves for Lifeblood, and through this plasma drive we’re doing it for patients across the country who rely on these donations every day.”
Council Chief Executive Officer Joe McCabe said Council employees could help address an ongoing demand for plasma, which is used in 18 life‑saving treatments.
“Plasma is the yellow liquid component of blood, and demand for it continues to grow nationally,” Mr McCabe said.
“While Townsville is a plasma donor centre, many people don’t realise plasma can be donated every two weeks, compared to whole blood which is every 12 weeks. That means donors can have a much greater impact over time.”
Lifeblood NQ spokesperson Gwendolyne Camaret said local government organisations always come together to show they are the heart of our community.
“We know Townsville City Council has many incredible donors already and we look forward to welcoming first-time donors who are inspired to donate as part of this blood drive too,” Ms Camaret said.
“New plasma donors are always needed, especially during winter.
“At this time of year many of our regular donors are sick with colds and flu, but the need for plasma doesn’t stop.”
In 2025 Townsville City Council placed 12th out of 290 participating councils, and in 2026 the organisation is aiming to climb even higher.
Mayor Dametto said Council hoped its participation would also inspire other large local employers to get involved.
“The demand for plasma is now at a record high, with more plasma being collected nationally than ever before,” he said.
“As a local government we have a responsibility to support our community, and I’d encourage other large organisations across Townsville to join us and help fill donor chairs, especially at this time of year.”
The Local Government Blood Drive runs through to 30 June 2026, with councillors and staff encouraged to donate throughout the campaign.
People can call 13 14 95, visit lifeblood.com.au, or download the Lifeblood app to book appointments, track donations and access basic health checks taken at each visit. The app also doubles as a digital donor card.
The Lifeblood Townsville Donor Centre is located at Tenancy 120, 103–141 Duckworth Street (Domain Central) and is open Monday to Saturday.
Residents can also check their eligibility by completing Lifeblood’s online quiz via the website.
