TLDMG moves to stand up

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has moved to stand up as the city prepares for severe storms today.

TLDMG Chair Nick Dametto said residents should stay prepared as a low pressure weather system moves closer to the North Queensland coast.

“The Bureau has forecast strong winds and heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding from this afternoon,” Cr Dametto said.

“We’re expecting these severe storms to intensify on Saturday and continue into Sunday, with damaging winds of up to 65km per hour, with wind gusts of up to 90km per hour.

“There is a chance of this weather system forming into a cyclone.

“I am asking residents to remain prepared. Make sure your emergency kit is ready with enough food, clothing and medications for three days.

“Now is the time to prepare your home and know your evacuation plan.

“If it’s flooded, forget it. Do not drive through floodwaters.

“Powerlines may be affected by wind gusts. Do not approach fallen powerlines. Report fallen powerlines immediately by calling triple-0 or Ergon on 13 16 70.

“If you need to sandbag your property, do it now. Sand is available at Lou Litster Park, Ross River Dam, Mount Low Parkway and Bluewater Community Centre.”

The Ross River Dam gates are currently closed and will open automatically when the dam reaches 103 per cent in line with the Ross River Dam Emergency Action Plan.
