A fresh start as Council moves to revitalise Strand site

Townsville City Council is clearing the green for the city’s next chapter, preparing a prime site at the southern edge of The Strand and CBD for its next chapter.
The former Strand Bowls Club, which has been largely unused for almost a decade, will be demolished as part of Council’s broader focus on revitalisation, strategic planning and unlocking the potential of underutilised land.
Mayor Nick Dametto said Council was getting on with the job of positioning Townsville for its next phase of growth.
“Revitalising and beautifying underutilised land and assets is a crucial part of building confidence in our CBD, and this is a clear signal that Council is serious about strengthening Townsville’s long‑term prospects,” Cr Dametto said.
“This is about preparing Townsville for our next step up, and Council leading by example when it comes to managing derelict, underutilised buildings,” he said.
“The Strand Bowls Club was established in 1914 and served the community for more than 100 years. When membership declined around ten years ago, the club handed the site back to Council.
“It’s part of Townsville’s history and many in the community feel nostalgic about the club, but the building is no longer fit for purpose and contains large amounts of asbestos, which has made renovation or repurposing unviable.
“So, it’s now time to reset this space, improve the presentation of The Strand and ensure the site is ready to support growth moving forward.”
Council has contracted Markwell Group to carry out the $220,000 demolition.
Once cleared, the site will be put to use while being held for longer‑term redevelopment when the time is right.
“In the short term, the space will be used for additional car parking to support ferry travellers and events at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre,” Cr Dametto said.
“About 90 new carparks will be delivered in the coming months, using the existing Enterprise House carpark entrance.
“It’s a prominent site primed for significant further development but, in the meantime, this project will improve usability for residents and visitors alike, and ensure Townsville is ready to capitalise on opportunities as they arise.”
Perimeter fencing will be installed this week ahead of works in the coming weeks.
