Council supports sale of land for Morleys parking plan

The sale of land to a Garbutt business for additional off-street car parking will help ease congestion in busy Martinez Avenue at the Lakes.

Townsville City Council today approved a planning report recommending the council agree to the sale of a portion of a 994sq m vacant block of land to Morley’s Funerals who will use the area to expand its off-street parking.

Council will retain a five metre wide parcel of the land for public access to park reserve near the lake.

Planning and Development Committee chairman Cr Tony Parsons said the creation of more off-street parking in the street would benefit the local area.

"Morley’s plans to create more off-street parking will make a significant difference in reducing the congestion that occurs on a daily basis along Martinez Avenue," Cr Parsons said.

"The company has purchased adjoining crown land from the State Government to extend their existing car park, and the portion of council land will provide an important access point to the site.

"More off-street parking will take pressure off Martinez Avenue and that will be welcomed by wide variety of businesses in the area."

Today’s decision authorises the council’s Chief Executive Officer to negotiate the terms and conditions for the sale in line with market value.
