Townsville mayor Cr Jenny Hill has committed to leading an open and accountable council that will deliver a strong agenda of new initiatives and policies for the city.

Cr Hill and 10 councillors were officially sworn-in today at the Townsville City Council’s first public statutory meeting since the March 19 election.

During the meeting, Cr Les Walker was elected Deputy Mayor and six standing committees were appointed. The council also voted to continue monthly council meetings.

Cr Hill said the newly elected council would work hard to repay the faith of the community which had delivered her team a strong mandate.

“This will be an inclusive council that will encourage open and constructive debate, but without the disunity and division of previous years,” Cr Hill said.

“Each and every councillor has a responsibility and an obligation to work hard together for the benefit of our great city.

“The residents of Townsville have overwhelmingly backed our strong program of policies to keep downward pressure on rates, to focus heavily on front line services and programs in our community, and support business and economic opportunities for the city’s growth.

“We have a big agenda, but I have given a commitment to the ratepayers of Townsville that we will deliver our policy initiatives in an affordable way.

“The hard work starts straight away with the development of this year’s budget and I look forward to working with all councillors to deliver a first year plan that also acknowledges the tough economic times we face.

“My first priority is to work with the council team to follow through on our key commitment to provide ratepayers with relief through a freeze on rates.”

Cr Hill said the council had approved six standing committees as well as advisory committees that would focus on the key areas of service and program delivery and more community input.

“Our committees will provide a good mix of experience and new ideas and councillors have been appointed to positions where their skills and knowledge will best serve our community,” Cr Hill said.

“The new look council has many fresh faces, and they are rearing to go with enthusiasm, professionalism and a positive outlook on what we can achieve for Townsville.”
