A new play that mixes wry humour and a dash of Tennessee Williams with a killer 60s and 70s soundtrack is coming to Townsville later this month.

Bastard Territory, a confessional drama that tells the story of a man and a city carving out its identity in the early 2000s in Darwin will be performed at the Riverway Arts Centre on Saturday, April 23.

The 160-minute long play presented by the Townsville City Council and produced by the JUTE Theatre Company is by critically acclaimed Brisbane-based playwright Stephen Carleton.

The one-night-only show tells the story of café/art gallery/queer cabaret dive owner Russell and his boyfriend living in Darwin and the earth-shattering family truths that are about to shake their lives.

Performances from Benhur Helwend, Suellen Maunder, Peter Norton, Steven Tandy and Ella Watson-Russell are set to bring this multicultural show to life along with the creative direction of critically and commercially successful director Ian Lawson.

Bastard Territory will be performed at 7.30pm on Saturday, April 23.

Tickets are $45 with concessions available. Book at www.ticketshop.com.au or phone 4727 9797.
