Townsville’s Tony Ireland Stadium is set to erupt with the excitement of International T20 cricket this weekend when Papua New Guinea and Ireland go head to head.

The two teams will clash in three fully sanctioned ICC matches on the Townsville arena on Saturday, Sunday and next Tuesday, all of which are free to the public.

Townsville City Council Sports, Recreation and Parks Committee chairman Cr Pat Ernst urged families to turn out for free T20 action.

“It’s a great opportunity for families to see some exciting cricket action and to make it even better it’s free,” Cr Ernst said.

“So I’d urge mums and dads to bring the kids to experience the razzle dazzle, the big hits and spectacular fielding of T20.”

Townsville fans will be treated to World class performers including former England ODI and Test bowler Boyd Rankin now playing for Ireland, Kevin O’Brien, who hit the fastest ODI century (50 balls) in World Cup cricket.

All three T20 matches will count towards World rankings and player standings.

At the weekend matches, gates open at 10.45am on game day, with coin toss at 1.30pm and start of play at 2pm. Entertainment will include T20Blast junior cricket from 11am-12.15pm.

Gates open for Tuesday’s match at 12.30pm.
