Seniors program offers a chance to get tech savvy

Townsville seniors can improve their digital literacy for free as the Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland program rolls out at CityLibraries Townsville.

Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland will provide training to older residents in basic digital literacy and encourage them to use technology to connect with family and the broader community.

Seniors can sign up to learn how to use a tablet device, navigate social media and how to shop, bank and pay bills online.

An initiative of State Library of Queensland, Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Telstra that will see 38 Queensland Local Governments deliver training through their local public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres.

Community and Culture Committee chair Cr Sue Blom said she hoped all Queenslanders could become part of the digital community.

“Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland joins a suite of initiatives, introduced by the Queensland Government, aiming to improve older residents’ access to online information and services,” Cr Blom said.

She said Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland training couldn’t come soon enough for Townsville residents.

“I encourage any Townsville seniors who want to improve their technology skills to sign up for a free course, and give it a go,” Cr Blom said.

“Many seniors have embraced new technology, but some are still overwhelmed or intimidated by the thought of getting online.

“We can’t wait to help our older residents get online to pay bills and connect with their grandchildren on Facebook.”
