Stanley Street utilities upgrade finishes on schedule

Townsville City Council work on an upgrade of water and sewerage mains in the CBD has finished on schedule, and traffic is expected to return to Stanley Street by the weekend.

The work was part of the broader CBD Utilities Upgrade and carried out by the Lancini Group in conjunction with stormwater diversionary works associated with their new Woolworths development in Sturt Street.

Council’s Director of Water and Waste said the final asphalting to reinstate the road surface was underway following the completion of the work which began in October.

“Council is now finished with this package of works right on schedule and two way traffic will once again be back on the section of Stanley Street between Sturt and Flinders Streets by the weekend,” Mr Parsons said.

“These were essential works for the CBD’s growth, replacing ageing pipework that was in some cases over 60 years old.

“By doing this work alongside the Woolworths development, we will avoid having to excavate Stanley Street twice.

“We thank the public and businesses for their patience throughout the project period.”

While council’s work is finished, in the interest of public safety private on-site construction for the Woolworths development will require the closure of the outward bound lane of Sturt Street to remain in place for a number of weeks.

Pedestrian footpaths will be kept open and access will be maintained for local traffic and deliveries.

An update with the latest information on the works has been sent to businesses and residents in the area.
