Schools commit to nurturing nature

Townsville students will again have a chance to develop their green thumbs when 19 schools participate in this year’s Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day.

The annual event will be held on Wednesday, July 27 at Riverway Raintree Grove from 9.30am to 11.30am to celebrate the importance of trees and get school children involved in protecting our environment.

Community Health and Environment Committee chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said Townsville City Council had been a part of Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day for 18 years and in that time had given thousands of trees to local schools.

“The trees and shrubs we hand out to schools help to beautify and establish the school grounds and it’s great to see the children get involved with the planting,” Cr Greaney said.

“Schools Tree Day is a great opportunity to teach the younger generations about flora and how trees fit into the eco-system.”

The schools event comes ahead of the community celebration on Sunday, July 31 for National Tree Day.

This year’s National Tree Day community tree planting will be held from 8.30-11am at Lou Litster Park, Hermit Park (access from Philp St).

The event will include free native trees, free sausage sizzle, kids entertainment, Ranger Dan, tree planting, mulching and weeding and the chance to win a family pass to a Cowboys home game.

Planting supplies will be provided but participants are asked to bring gloves, closed in shoes and remember to be sun smart. For further information and a map of location go to www.townsville.qld.gov.au
