Short story competition winners announced

Budding authors of all ages participated in the recent CityLibraries Townsville Short Story Competition penning their tales of Townsville, its stories, people and places.

Council received 29 entries across the two categories this year; Young Adult (12-17 years) and Adults (18 years +).

Young adult winner was Pheobe Evans for her story Bleached about a young woman who forms a lifetime relationship with a fish, and adult winner was Ian McIntosh for his story Bindal Boy about a boy who learns valuable life lessons while hiding from a crocodile in the mangroves.

Runners up were Kila Pope for Past Ghosts, a story about being trapped into servitude and Lindy Collins for Townsville Tunnels, a story about two old ladies on an adventure to discover if there are tunnels under Townsville city.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the aim of the competition was to promote the value of writing to the wider community.

“The competition was open to all residents in the Townsville area and the response from our budding writers this year has been great,” Cr Doyle said.

“The competition showcases the creativity of Townsville residents with a very high calibre of entries received this year.

“The competition also allows our CityLibraries to demonstrate the value of writing and the great programs and facilities on offer at our branches to support writers and give them a platform to share their work with the community.”

The winning stories can be read online on council's CityLibraries page.

Sponsors of the competition, the Queensland Writers Centre and the Townsville Writers and Publishers Centre presented winners with 12-month memberships and winners also received an ipad at a presentation at CityLibraries Thuringowa last night.

Runners up received movie tickets.
