Strand Park playground gets a facelift

Brand new play equipment will be unveiled at Strand Park tomorrow, replacing the Teen Rager which had kept older children entertained for the past 17 years.

The new playground valued at $300,000 will include a small tower, net and slide combination and super frisbee on top of softfall flooring.

Infrastructure Committee chair Cr Mark Molachino said the former playground had provided much enjoyment for children, particularly young teens, since the Strand redevelopment opened in 1999.

“The Teen Rager had been a huge hit with the older kids right from the beginning, but the equipment had run its course and was due for replacement,” Cr Molachino said.

“Council is pleased to be able to offer Townsville families an upgraded and improved playground as part of the great infrastructure already offered along the Strand.”

Divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the new playground was a great addition to Strand Park.

“I’m certain the new playground will be a huge hit with visitors to the Strand, offering lots of climbing opportunities and a great way to keep kids active,” Cr Greaney said.

The new equipment is part of a larger project which includes the construction of a series of fitness nodes near Longboards and the Seaview valued at $130,000.

Strand picnic shelters are also being re-roofed between Sister Kenney Playground and the Waterpark.

Work on the new Waterpark is progressing, with work scheduled to be completed in time for the summer school holidays.
