Junior detectives set their sights on water conservation

School children of Townsville…your mission is to investigate ways to save water at home and identify and apprehend any water-wasting culprits!

To coincide with National Water Week, October 16-22, council is inviting local school students to become water detectives to investigate ways to save water during Level 3 water restrictions.

Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Paul Jacob said the Water Detective Handbooks were a fun way to get the city’s youngest residents to think about water conservation.

“The handbook is a unique concept that develops and implements a series of educational tools around water saving and hopes to instil water-conscious behaviours in children,” Cr Jacob said.

“It’s a fun approach that uses mini missions and stickers to address ‘water wasting offences’ such as running water while cleaning teeth.

“These are behavioural changes that children can make and relates specifically to them.”

The handbook, created by council’s Water Cycle Team, targets children in Years 4-6 and aims to reduce water consumption through fun and engaging activities children can do at home.

The team have applied behavioural science approaches to the project to help inspire action within the Townsville community during the dry conditions.

“This is an engagement tool designed to activate Townsville kids and have them participate in water conservation through fun and interactive missions,” Water Cycle Educator Holly Dembowski said.
