Kindergarten pledges to support Christmas appeal

Koolkuna Community Kindergarten is challenging other Townsville day care centres and kindergartens to collect the most food and toy donations for this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal.

The centre has pledged its support for the appeal for the first time this year and is encouraging its families to bring in donations over a four-week period.

The day care centre that collects the most will receive a red trike and trailer valued at $230 from Toyworld.

The kindergarten’s co-director Kate Stevens said they decided to help the appeal because there were so many families in need in the Townsville area.

“We heard that the appeal had received a request for about 400 gifts for children aged under five years which is the age of the children that attend the centre,” Ms Stevens said.

“We also know that the appeal is about putting food on the table this festive season, so we’ll also be asking our families to donate non-perishable food items when they can.”

Local councillor Ann-Maree Greaney praised the centre for its participation.

“Last year we had four day care centres register, but this year we’d love to get lots more,” Cr Greaney said.

“If we could get 400 families donate one toy each, then we would hit our target.

“It’s so sad to think that children this young may have to go without a gift this Christmas, but with the help of the community we can make sure this doesn’t happen.”
