Sustainable House Day puts environment in the spotlight

Residents will be offered tips and information on how to be more water wise among a range of environmental topics at this year’s Sustainable House Day at the Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre.

The popular annual event, to be held on Sunday, September 11, will cover everything from reducing water consumption, to strengthening your lawn, solar lighting, LED lights, portable power solutions, electric vehicles and much more.

Community Health and Environment Committee chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said with the current Level 3 water restrictions in place, residents were looking for ideas to cut down on their water use.

“Our staff can assist with handy tips and great ideas to help residents cut their consumption but also keep their gardens alive and there are a range of things people can do, some they may not have even considered,” Cr Greaney said.

“At Sustainable House Day residents can learn how making even small changes can make a big difference to your house and garden and how that in turn can have a positive impact on the environment while saving you money.”

Hands on Wildlife will be there for a chance to meet some local wildlife first hand between 10am and 12pm, and a range of other kids activities.

Visitors will also be treated to drinks and wood-fired pizzas.

The event will be held at the Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre, 56 Cape Pallarenda Rd on Sunday, September 11 from 10am to 2pm.

Council will also be hosting the Great Northern Clean Up on the beach opposite the Sustainability House, Rowes Bay, this Sunday from 8am.

This is an opportunity for residents to come down and assist to clean up the beach.

The event is timed to occur just before the wet season and after the tourist season to help prevent rubbish being swept into our oceans, creeks, rivers, lakes and ravines.
