As part of Townsville’s 150th anniversary year, CityLibraries has produced the T150 Education Kit for schools.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said it was hoped the kits would assist teachers to develop engaging activities for their students.

“The kit offers snapshots of important features, events and people pertaining to the history of Townsville,” Cr Doyle said.

“We want the young generation to learn about our city’s past and it’s important that this information is passed on in a fun and engaging manner to maximise learning.”

Topics included in the T150 Education Kit include:

* The history of Magnetic Island and its significance in Townsville life, past and present
* Analysis of historical photographs
* Wulgurukaba and Bindal peoples:  their stories and language
* Reading flags as stories
* Local Dreamtime stories, and indigenous names for suburbs and landscape features
* First contacts, and the story of James Morrill
* The discovery of gold in Charters Towers, and its importance to Townsville
* The legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo

Cr Doyle said the kit was aimed at primary students from Years 2 to 6, but people young and old would find the information and activities entertaining and informative.

“This information sheds light on the many facets of Townsville since it was first declared a municipality 150 years ago,” Cr Doyle said.

The kit can be downloaded from the Local History page on council’s website:  https://www.townsville.qld.gov.au/facilities-and-recreation/libraries/local-history
