Street Art program selected as finalist in national awards

Townsville City Council’s Street Art program has been selected as a finalist in the Property Council of Australia’s 2019 National Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The Innovation and Excellence Awards is the one of Australia’s most prestigious property awards program and promotes excellence in design and innovation.
Council’s Street Art program has been shortlisted in the PEXA Award for Project Innovation category for the initiative’s commitment to creating jobs, prosperity and building a stronger community.
Street Art Activation Working Group Member Cr Russ Cook said having the Street Art program as a finalist for a national award is a well-deserved achievement.
“Townsville’s Street Art Trail has grown to be quite extensive and is well-known within the art community,” Cr Cook said.
“We have a number of new artworks, including a massive mural recently created by Australian artist Claire Foxton, which enlivens the city and brings visitors into the CBD.
“The Street Art program is also beneficial in reducing illegal graffiti and the cost of the clean-up.”
Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the program demonstrates the benefits of Council divisions working together.
“The initiative was created collaboratively by Council’s Planning and Galleries teams, and really demonstrates some of the innovative talent within our community,” Cr Walker said.
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said Townsville is becoming well-known for the Street Art program.
“We are lucky to have worked with some incredible local, national and international artists to create the artworks decorating the city,” Cr Greaney said.
“Street Art is a fantastic way to attract locals and visitors into the CBD.”
