Seagull swoops into Sturt Street

Townsville City Council’s CBD street art program has added a splash of colour to Sturt Street.
Fresh from completing his kookaburras mural at the Bus Hub, West Australian artist James Giddy has painted a new seagull mural on Sturt Street.
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said she’s pleased Council found a second ‘canvas’ for the talented artist.
“James Giddy did a wonderful job painting the kookaburras on a massive wall at the Bus Hub and it’s great that we’ve had him here for a second artwork on Sturt Street,” Cr Doyle said
“He finished the kookaburras mural very quickly so it gave him time to complete a second artwork.”
Street Art Activation Working Group Chair Cr Russ Cook said James is focussing on another bird in his new mural.
“Seagulls are a common sight on Townsville’s beaches and James has brought a seagull to Sturt Street,” Cr Cook said.
“He’s adopted a different approach to his last piece, he’s included a beach landscape inside the seagull.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the Sturt Street painting is the 27th project in Council’s street art program.
”Our growing art collection is becoming a big drawcard for the CBD,” Cr Greaney said.
“We’re using local, national and international artists to lure people to the city – and we’re encouraging art fans to explore inner city shops and cafes while they’re admiring the art.”
