Walk Against Violence kicks off 16 Days of Activism

Date published: 25 November 2022

Council held its annual Walk Against Violence on Friday 25 November, to kick off its 16 Days of Activism initiative.

16 Days of Activism aims to encourage conversations and raise awareness of the role everyone can play, while also raising awareness of domestic and family violence and the services available to those experiencing domestic and family violence.

Deputy Mayor Mark Molachino led this year’s Walk Against Violence and was joined by representatives from a number of local groups, including Zonta Townsville, Australian defence force members, local police and council staff.

Cr Molachino said it was encouraging to see the public to get behind this event and make their voices heard to help end gender-based violence.

“Everyone took the chance to talk about domestic and family violence and the challenge of calling out disrespectful behaviour as we walked from the Red Bench at the Townsville City Council Forecourt at 103 Walker Street to the Red Bench at Central Park,” Cr Molachino said.

“Participants also had the opportunity to tie a ribbon to the Red Bench as we stood together to say no to domestic and family violence.”

Participants were encouraged to wear orange on the walk to help draw attention to stopping violence against women.

The 16 Days of Activism runs from 25 November, the International Day for the elimination of violence against women, until December 10, the International Day of Human Rights.
