Council approves Douglas unit development

A popular leafy green Townsville suburb could soon house more families, after Councillors voted unanimously in today’s ordinary Council meeting to approve a multiple-unit development in Douglas.

Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said Councillors voted to approve a material change of use for an almost 4000m2 block of vacant development land to allow for the construction of 34 multiple dwellings.

“As mayor I want people to know that as a Council and as a city we are open for business. This approval paves the way for 34 units that will bring infill housing back into what is a very popular and well serviced suburb,” Cr Dametto said.

“This site has been sitting vacant since the inception of the Douglas development, and while it has been classed as Open Space, its private ownership has meant it couldn’t be used by the public.

“With Townsville’s population expected to exceed 250,000 by 2041, it’s critical our city is building not only momentum in our approvals, but building on our city’s capacity and ability to construct this much-needed housing of tomorrow.”

To house Townsville’s growing population, 1,200 new homes will be needed each year on average.

Councillor Dametto said the proposed development would consist of 34 units across three buildings, as well as onsite parking and shared recreational amenities.

“As part of the plans there are 48 covered onsite car parks and 68 parks in total which will service this development as well as a centrally located shared recreational area with a pool and gazebo,” Cr Dametto said.

“We have listened to our community through submissions made during the public notification period and I believe that our planning department has addressed concerns around parking and traffic management as well as environmental impacts and construction impacts.

“I’m looking forward to seeing shovels in the ground and much-needed housing created.”
