Emergency services, Council urge residents to Get Ready Townsville
Date published: 31 October 2025
Gather the knowledge and tools you need to be prepared for all types of disasters at this Sunday’s Get Ready Townsville event.
The free day out includes more than 40 specialists like the SES, the Queensland Fire Department, Cyclone Testing Station and Council, giving residents tips for how to prepare, information on what happens before, during, and after a cyclone, flood or bushfire.
Attendees will also be able to meet with local businesses that supply important items like first aid kits and generators.
Townsville Local Disaster Management Group Chair Andrew Robinson said Sunday’s event was a must-do for any new Townsville residents.
“Life in Townsville is fantastic, we live on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and have more than 300 days of sunshine a year. But we also accept the risk we face the potential for disasters like bushfires, floods and cyclones each year,” Cr Robinson said.
“As we learned earlier this year, disasters can strike fast and have lasting effects. This is where preparation pays off in dividends.
“Heading along to Get Ready Townsville at the new location here at Riverway, will help you learn about how to prepare for, what to do during and how you, your family and your city can recover following a disaster.”
Cr Robinson said there were three easy steps anyone could follow to get ready.
“It’s important for every Townsville resident, whether you’re a long-time local or a new arrival, to understand your risk, have a plan and pack an emergency kit,” he said.
“If you arm yourself with knowledge and get ready now, you’ll be in good stead for this high-risk weather season.”
Queensland Police Service A/Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson said that the event is a timely reminder for Townsville residents.
“Queensland is impacted by more natural disasters than anywhere else in Australia, which is why it is crucial all residents head into disaster season with an understanding of their risk and with a plan,” he said.
“Planning and preparedness are crucial to ensuring the safety of both the community and emergency response crews during a disaster event, as well as recovery efforts once the threat has passed, and we urge all Townsville residents to consider what steps they need to take ahead of disaster season.
“The weather doesn’t plan, but you can.”
Get Ready Townsville runs from 9am to midday at Riverway this Sunday.
