Townsvillians encouraged to pitch in for Pallarenda clean-up

The Townsville community is invited to roll up their sleeves and help protect one of the city’s most iconic coastal areas this Clean Up Australia Day, with this year’s official event being held at Walter Nisbet Park in Pallarenda.
Divisional councillor Ann‑Maree Greaney said the annual community clean‑up, hosted by Townsville City Council, was an opportunity for residents to play their part in protecting the environment whilst enjoying a morning outdoors.
“Townsville residents have always shown enormous pride in their city, especially when it comes to looking after our natural surroundings,” Cr Greaney said.
“This year we’re focusing our efforts on the beautiful Pallarenda coastline, and we’re encouraging everyone to come along, pitch in, and help protect this important part of our natural and marine environment.
“Everything participants need on the day will be provided, including clean-up bags and gloves, so just bring yourself, family and friends as well as a water bottle, hat and enclosed shoes.”
Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said the annual Clean Up Australia Day event was a national tradition that encouraged people to take pride in the beautiful part of the world they call home.
“This year marks 36 years of Clean Up Australia Day – it’s the ultimate annual emu parade that so many of us have embedded in our childhood and schoolyard memories,” Cr Dametto said.
“I encourage families to continue with this tradition by passing it on to the next generation, and this Sunday’s event is a perfect way to do just that.”
Residents are invited to join Council for Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday 1 March at Walter Nisbit Park, from 8:30am.
All volunteers will receive a free native plant as thanks for their time, and there will be refreshments on hand.
