Kids, pets to benefit from Reading To Pets sessions

Pets waiting for their furever homes atCouncil’s Animal Care and Adoption Centre will now have children come into the centre to read to them with the much-anticipated return of the Reading to Pets program.
Similar programs are hosted by libraries and animal shelters around the world and provide a chance for children from age five to 18 to read to a non-judgmental audience, helping to increase their reading confidence.
The program also has the added benefit of giving pets in the Animal Care and Adoption Centre some much-needed love and attention during the reading sessions.
The two sessions will run from 11am to midday on Tuesday 9 April and Wednesday 10 April.
A Council spokesperson said Reading to Pets was a great way for young people to make new friends while improving their literacy skills.
“Each session will have 15 participants, including parents and guardians, and will start with a group story time. From there participants will be able to branch off either individually or in small groups to read to the animals in the shade or in the cat enclosure,” the spokesperson said.
“These sessions are a great way to build confidence with reading for our young readers. As a Council we’re focused on building Townsville into a leading centre of education, and that includes bolstering free interactive education opportunities across our city like this one.
“Bookings are essential to take part in Reading to Pets, including bookings for parents and guardians, so jump onto Council’s What's On Townsville website now to book your spot.
“On the day bring along a hat, sunscreen and your water bottle. Books will be provided for reading, and participants will have the opportunity to join the library and borrow books on site.”
