Townsville City Council has redeveloped the existing Wellington Street Depot to improve the efficiency of Council’s operations and better serve the community.
Upgrades included:
- staff and public car parking areas
- new undercover parking and storage areas
- irrigation workshop and storage
- refurbished administration building
- site wide fire safety systems
- new amenities building
- refurbishment of existing storage shed
- reinstatement of nursery.
The redevelopment has updated and improved the quality of the aged facility, providing Council staff with a safe and healthy working environment, and ensures compliance with current Occupational Health and Safety and Building Compliance Codes.
The additional functionality of the new depot created the opportunity to consolidate Council’s work teams to fully utilise the site. This consolidation provided enhanced operational efficiencies and economic benefits, improved collaboration opportunities and frees-up the existing Cranbrook depot site for community use by sporting clubs.
The community further benefits from the additional public car parking areas for visiting Kokoda Memorial Pool and Anderson Gardens – a 35-bay car park has been added between Healy Street and Gulliver Street for the community, and 61-bay car park at the Depot Administration building.
To minimise noise from ongoing depot operations, design development included an assessment of vehicle movements required to enter / leave the depot site, with these areas designed to minimise use of reversing beepers.
Gabrielli Constructions was awarded the contract, and commenced works on Monday 13 March 2023. Works on the depot and carpark were completed in December 2023. Final works of re-roofing the potting shed commenced in February 2024 and were completed in March 2024.
