Project Background
Townsville City Council is responsible for maintenance of the canal sections in Nelly Bay Harbour. Sidecasting activities in the Nelly Bay Marina in 2019 and 2023 temporarily addressed sediment accumulation affecting vessels using the marina berths. However, recent hydrographic surveys show maintenance dredging is required to restore the canal sections to their original design depths.
Project Overview
Council’s current approved option for the management of dredged materials is the use of Council’s site at 55-77 Kelly Street, which has the required permits and approvals in place.
Since early 2025, Council has been reassessing options for the treatment and management of dredged materials following the postponement of dredging works in the Nelly Bay area.
Preliminary discussions with federal and state governments agencies have identified sea placement as a potentially viable option. Council is now inviting community feedback on sea placement as a potential option. Visit Have Your Say to learn more and share your feedback.
