Status Preliminary works

Project Background

Townsville City Council is responsible for maintaining the canal sections in Nelly Bay Harbour. Sediment build up has been managed in the past through sidecasting activities in 2019 and 2023, which provided temporary relief for vessels using the marina berths.

Recent hydrographic surveys show that maintenance dredging is now required remove spoil from the marina and return the canal sections to their original design depths.

Dredging was scheduled for early 2025 but postponed so Council could prioritise urgent road and bridge repairs following severe rainfall events.

Project Overview

Since early 2025, Council has been reassessing options for how dredged materials should be treated and managed.

The currently approved option is to use Council’s site at 55–77 Kelly Street. This site has the necessary permits and approvals. However, community engagement has highlighted concerns from residents, and Council is now investigating alternative approaches.

Discussions with federal and state government agencies have identified sea placement as a potentially viable option.

Council ran a community consultation program in late 2025, and is currently assessing the suitability of the options available for treatment and management of the dredge spoil.
