Priority Coastal Works

What works are coming up?
Townsville City Council will undertake priority coastal works along a section of Toolakea Beach. This project will help maintain the foreshore and protect critical road infrastructure from the impacts of large tidal events. These works will be undertaken within the most practical tidal ranges available. Council will continue to monitor the impacts of any upcoming tidal events, and reschedule additional works as required.

Sand will be reclaimed from the northern end of the beach, transported to the priority area by truck and placed using skid steer and an excavator.

Traffic control between 28-52 The Esplanade and temporary beach access closures will be in place during works.

What will the works include?
As part of these works Council will:

  • Collect sand using heavy machinery from the northern end of the beach.
  • Transport the sand by truck to the at‑risk dune areas and placed using skid steer and an excavator.
  • Use skid steer to help keep a safe access route for heavy machinery along the beach and shape the placed sand.
  • Under traffic control, utilise between 28-52 The Esplanade to return the trucks to the northern beach area.

What does this mean for me?
If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:

  • construction machinery and vehicle movement
  • increased levels of dust, noise, and vibrations
  • temporary beach access closures
  • temporary disruptions to vehicle access to properties and some on-street parking
  • temporary traffic changes, including lane closures, minor traffic delays and reduced speed limits.
