Coastal Management

Council is undertaking coastal management works, which involves reshaping the sand along the foreshore that is most vulnerable to erosion. This work also includes enhanced maintenance for the beach access paths along the foreshore of Cungulla Beach, Cungulla.
This project is part of Council’s ongoing commitment towards environmental management, which has identified the need for coastal management initiatives to address and mitigate the effects of erosion caused by recent weather events.
As part of this project, Council will undertake placement of sand to the most vulnerable sections of the foreshore for better stability and to protect assets. Council staff will oversee and manage any environmental impacts resulting from these operations.

Townsville City Council will be undertaking sand scraping and redistribution works along a section of the Pallarenda foreshore including the mouth of Three Mile Creek.
These works involve relocating sand from the southern side of the Three Mile Creek mouth to the upper beach. This will help address areas of erosion and improve overall beach amenity for the community.
The project forms part of Council’s ongoing commitment to environmental management, aimed at restoring beach amenity, enhancing the resilience of the Pallarenda foreshore, and stabilising the site in preparation for further sand placement scheduled for later in the year.
Works include sand scraping, relocation and placement to restore eroded areas of the foreshore.

Drainage

Normal work hours: 6am to 6pm Monday to Saturday
Council is continuing stage 2 of drainage improvements along Winifred Street, including drainage upgrades and road works at the Winifred Street and Brownhill Street intersection.
This project is part of Council’s stormwater Capital Works program, designed to address and improve drainage across Council’s networks, and raise the quality of life for residents.
As part of this project, Council will:
- upgrade drainage infrastructure at the Winifred and Brownhill Street intersection
- duplicate the drainage line along Winifred Street to the Ross River
- resurface Winifred Street
- revegetate impacted areas, including the park and river embankment.

As part of these works, Council has:
- installed a new stormwater drainage pipe network in Brownhill Street
- constructed three kerb inlets and reconstructed kerb and channel in Brownhill Street
- constructed two kerb inlets in Winifred Street, fronting No.37
- constructed a new inlet in the park adjacent to No.38.

Environmental Restoration

What works are coming up?
With pile installation complete the next key milestone activity is the construction of the concrete abutments and central pier headstock that hold the deck beams in place. The abutments are built on top of and connected to the piles. In April 2026, 28 deck beams measuring 18 metres long and 800mm wide will be delivered to the Gustav Creek structure restoration works area.
Townsville City Council plans to begin deck beam installation in May 2026.
These works will cause disruption to nearby residents, businesses and visitors to the area. Depending on how close you are to the
construction work, noise will be noticeable.
As part of this stage, Council contractor, BMD Constructions will:
- construct concrete abutments and the central pier headstock that hold the deck beams in place
- cut the piles on the central pier and school side abutment to size
- prepare reinforcing steel connections on the piles
- Delivery of 28 deck beams to the headstock/abutments

Council will be undertaking aquatic vegetation management in the Fairfield Freshwater Wetland and Northern Sediment Basin in Idalia.
This project is part of Council’s ongoing commitment towards environmental management. Recent assessment has identified the need to harvest exotic aquatic weeds from the sediment basin and broader lakes system. Removing this vegetation will help maintain water quality, improve ecosystem health and support the long-term function of the wetland.
As part of this project, Council will:
- remove invasive aquatic plants and associated vegetation
- process the removed vegetation into ground mulch for use in future Council projects
- continue investigating additional control options to support long-term weed management
- monitor water quality and manage any environmental impacts that may arise from these works.

Townsville City Council is undertaking environmental restoration maintenance works along the riverbank to the Ross River within Sherriff and Archery Parks, Mundingburra.
Council began these works in October 2024. We expect maintenance weeding, mulching, and planting to take four months to complete and low-impact maintenance weeding to occur periodically until June 2026.
Council proposes dividing the site into two sections, restricting pedestrian access, and directing pedestrians to an alternative route.
We will close the pedestrian path within each section along the riverbank to suit works progress over the two week period.
Section one is from Sherriff Park to the Mabin Street Park entrance. Section two is from Mabin Street to the midpoint of Archery Park. You can still access the area through the Mabin Street park entrance.
Council will use safety bollards and flagging to mark the work areas and to ensure public safety.

Event Road Closures

Recent heavy rainfall has damaged culverts under the bridge crossing Gustav Creek on Sooning Street and due to community safety concerns Council has closed the bridge.
A preliminary engineering assessment has been conducted and further investigations are required.
Council endeavours to have this additional inspection, and any necessary repairs completed as quickly as possible.
A detour is currently in place via Kelly St, Barton St and Mandalay Ave as signed to access Nelly Bay.

- rehabilitate sewer infrastructure
- restore any disturbed area upon completion of the work.

Council will be undertaking roadside vegetation removal and associated landscaping works along identified sections of Castle Hill Road, Castle Hill.
These works are essential to maintain safe road and verge conditions and will require a temporary road closure while work is underway.
This project supports Council’s ongoing commitment to environmental management and remediation of roadside verges to ensure they remain safe and accessible.
As part of these works, Council will:
- clear vegetation and rocks along the road verge
- remove fallen branches and protruding roots
- maintenance of grass, trees, and shrubs.

Council advises that, due to the nature of these works, Castle Hill Road will be closed to all traffic from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Walking tracks will remain open throughout the duration of the works.

Council is preparing to upgrade the Flinders Street road corridor lighting, which includes installing new environmentally sustainable, energy-efficient fixtures along Flinders Street, from Wickham Street to Stanley Street, Townsville City.
This initiative supports Council’s commitment to community safety by enhancing roads, transport infrastructure, parks, and water systems – ensuring community connectivity and safety needs are met while continuing to support the growth of our region.
As part of these works, Council will:
- remove old lighting infrastructure
- install new energy-efficient lighting.

Council will be undertaking invasive vegetation removal and associated landscaping works along the Kissing Point Track, adjacent to The Strand Rock Pool, North Ward.
These works are essential to maintain safe and accessible pedestrian connections. To ensure community safety, temporary access restrictions will be in place throughout works.
This project supports Council’s ongoing commitment to environmental management and the remediation of pedestrian infrastructure so that walking tracks remain safe, accessible and well maintained.
As part of these works, Council will:
- remove overgrown vegetation and invasive weeds along sections of the walking track
- remove fallen branches and protruding tree roots
- undertake minor track remediation where required
- carry out maintenance of grassed areas, trees and shrubs.

Townsville City Council is in the final stages of planning the maintenance and refurbishment works on the dividing swim wall within the 50-meter Long Tan Memorial Pool in Heatley.
This project is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to effective infrastructure management, addressing identified maintenance needs to ensure our recreational facilities remain safe, functional and enjoyable.
As part of these works, Council will remove, refurbish and reinstate the existing dividing swim wall.

Townsville City Council will commence upgrade works at the Magnetic Island Wastewater Recycling (MIWR) Facility as part of the Magnetic Island Recycled Water Irrigation System Upgrade project.
These works will improve recycled water storage and improve irrigation infrastructure across key sites on Magnetic Island, supporting environmental compliance and enhancing long-term system performance.
As part of these works, Council will:
- construct a new 1ML recycled water tank at MIWR
- upgrade identified monitoring and control systems
- undertake integration of irrigation system controls at:
- Magnetic Island Country Club
- Magnetic Island Transfer Station
- Picnic Bay Landfill.

Townsville City Council is undertaking sewer pipe and maintenance hole inspections of the network in your area.
This program allows Council to undertake condition assessments as part of our network maintenance strategy. The data collected by these surveys will allow Council to plan for future rehabilitation and replacement work.
Council has appointed Interflow Pty Ltd to carry out this project on our behalf.
To proceed with these works, Interflow may require access to clean the sewer maintenance hole and the associated wastewater pipeline within and adjacent to your property boundary.
Cleaning and CCTV activities at most sites will take a few days to complete. Interflow will inform you if further access to your property is
needed.
Interflow will advise you via a letter drop if access is required into your property. The Interflow team leader is Phil Ojamaa (Mob 0403 650 805).
As part of this project, Council will:
- inspect sewer pipe and maintenance holes with CCTV camera surveys
- clean and flush sewers and underground pipework by jetting
- restore any disturbed area upon works completion.

Townsville City Council in partnership with a local contractor Jacobs, is planning to undertake geotechnical investigations for the potential sewer main relocation around Ross River Road in Aitkenvale and Mundingburra.
This project is part of Council’s broader long-term investment in water and wastewater systems. It contributes to the city’s Capital Works Program, which is focused on maintaining our community’s water and wastewater infrastructure in optimal condition.
As part of this project, Council will:
- drill test pits, deep boreholes and shallow boreholes
- restore disturbed areas upon completion.

What works are coming up?
Townsville City Council will be undertaking demolition works at the former Strand Bowls Club site as part of Council’s ongoing asset management and future planning for The Strand precinct.
The work will involve the safe removal of the existing vacant building and associated structures. Council is coordinating these works to ensure they are completed efficiently and with minimal disruption to nearby residents, businesses and visitors.
What will the works include?
As part of this project, Council will:
- safely demolish the existing vacant building and associated structures
- manage and remove demolition materials from the site
- identify and safely manage any hazardous materials in accordance with regulatory requirements
- undertake site clean-up and secure the area for future site development.
Following this work, Council intends to install public carpark spaces in the short-term while the site is held for future redevelopment. This is expected to be delivered in the coming months.

Townsville City Council is undertaking construction works to deliver a new sewer rising main (wastewater pipeline) to service the Animal Care and Adoption Centre, located along Tompkins Road in Shaw.
This infrastructure upgrade is part of Council’s broader investment in water and wastewater systems, contributing to the city’s $352 million capital works program.
As part of the works, Council will:
- install a new underground wastewater pipeline
- construct a new wastewater pump station
- trenchless crossing of Shaw Road to establish sewer connections
- testing operations and site remediation.

Townsville City Council is preparing to begin construction of a new, larger diameter sewer pipe on Wright Street, to redirect wastewater from Glenlyon Drive, Powell and Neelsen Streets in Wulguru.
This will increase capacity of the network, reducing both the volume and frequency of wastewater overflows during wet weather events.
As part of this project, Council will:

Hazard Reduction Burns

Expected duration: Six (6) months
Council undertakes hazard reduction burns throughout the dry season each year as part of its Bushfire Mitigation Program. These activities help reduce the risk and spread of bushfires and protect lives, property and critical infrastructure.
Hazard reduction burns are carefully managed, controlled operations designed to reduce the build-up of flammable fuel loads, including leaf litter, grasses, and shrubs.
A series of hazard reduction burns are scheduled to take place across the city between May and July 2026, as outlined below. Please note that all burns are subject to suitable weather and operational conditions.

Council is undertaking construction works to deliver the renewal of Water Tank 1 at the Mount Low Reservoir, located at Euskadi Court in Bushland Beach.
This initiative reflects Council’s commitment to investing $352 million this year to enhance roads, transport infrastructure, parks, and water systems – ensuring that all properties continue to receive efficient and reliable water service.
As part of this project, Council will:
- renovate the reservoir roof.
- install access ladders and platforms.
- replace pipework.
- reinstate corrosion protection.
- apply a new internal protective coating to the tank.
If you live near or are travelling through the area, you may experience:
- construction machinery and vehicle movement
- increased levels of dust, noise, and vibrations
Council advises that renewal works affect Water Tank 1 only. Water Tank 2 will remain operational and continue servicing residents.

Council is undertaking construction works to deliver a new underground water main and associated infrastructure along seven identified road corridors in Wulguru.
This project forms part of Council’s annual Water Infrastructure Maintenance Program, which is designed to ensure our community’s water connectivity needs are met and operating efficiently, while continuing to support the growth and development of our region.
As part of this project, Council will:
- install a new underground water main pipeline and remove/decommission the existing pipeline
- conduct testing operations and remediate disturbed areas.
If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:
- construction machinery and increased vehicle movement
- higher levels of dust, noise, and vibrations
- temporary traffic changes, including lane closures, reduced speed limits, minor delays, and on-street parking closures
- temporary disruptions to vehicle access to properties.
Minor water outages may occur during the works. Council will notify affected properties in advance to reduce any inconvenience.
