Coastal Management

Coastal aerial surveys will be conducted along the north-east foreshore of Geoffrey Bay to survey and assess sand volume distribution and water flow paths. This information will inform ongoing and future sustainable management actions.
This project is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to sustainable environmental management, recognising the valuable role ongoing coastal monitoring plays in environmental resilience and erosion management practices.

Drainage

What works are coming up?
Council is undertaking drainage improvement works within the stormwater easement between Pomelo and Merivale Streets. These works are required to ensure the direction and flow of stormwater is appropriately managed and able to effectively drain to its outlet on Merivale Street.
This project is part of Council’s Capital Works program, aimed at addressing structural defects and improving drainage within our stormwater networks. The objective is to enhance safety, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
What will the works include?
As part of this project, Council will:
- Clear the existing area and establish a stormwater pipe alignment path connecting existing stormwater pipes.
- Reshape the general area to improve local drainage.
- Reinstate any close by items such as fencing affected by project
- Establish a small laydown area within the general area of Merivale Street.
What does this mean for me?

Environmental Restoration

Townsville City Council is undertaking environmental restoration maintenance works along the riverbank to the Ross River within Sherriff and Archery Parks, Mundingburra.
Council began these works in October 2024. We expect maintenance weeding, mulching, and planting to take four months to complete and low-impact maintenance weeding to occur periodically until June 2026.
Council proposes dividing the site into two sections, restricting pedestrian access, and directing pedestrians to an alternative route.
We will close the pedestrian path within each section along the riverbank to suit works progress over the two week period.
Section one is from Sherriff Park to the Mabin Street Park entrance. Section two is from Mabin Street to the midpoint of Archery Park. You can still access the area through the Mabin Street park entrance.
Council will use safety bollards and flagging to mark the work areas and to ensure public safety.

Council is undertaking erosion remediation works along the Ross River, located within the Townsville Recreational Boating Park at the end of Fifth Avenue.
This project is part of Council’s ongoing commitment towards environmental management, which has identified the need for erosion remediation works to mitigate the effects of recent weather events and enhance the resilience of Ross River for the upcoming wet season.
What will the works include?
As part of this project, Council will:
- install small amounts of rock to protect the riverbank from erosion
- retain informal fishing areas
- oversee and manage any environmental impacts resulting from these operations.

Event Road Closures

Recent heavy rainfall has damaged culverts under the bridge crossing Gustav Creek on Sooning Street and due to community safety concerns Council has closed the bridge.
A preliminary engineering assessment has been conducted and further investigations are required.
Council endeavours to have this additional inspection, and any necessary repairs completed as quickly as possible.
A detour is currently in place via Kelly St, Barton St and Mandalay Ave as signed to access Nelly Bay.

What works are coming up?
Townsville City Council plans to transport equipment and materials from the mainland to the Sooning Street bridge laydown area in preparation for construction work to begin.
Transportation dates are to suit Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) permits, tide times, barge and tug availability. We expect delivery to occur between Monday 1 December and Thursday 18 December 2025.
When will the works take place?
Mobilisation activities:
Monday 1 December to Friday 5 December – Mobilise to site
Monday 8 December - Pile platform construction begins
Tuesday 9 December – Delivery of Piles
Tuesday 16 December – Delivery of pre-boring drilling rig, a drilling rig, and a service crane
What will the works include?
As part of these works, Council will:
- Construct a platform for pile installation
- Barge the 28 x 18 metre piles to the Nelly Bay Marina and truck to site
- Land a barge on Horseshoe Bay beach to truck equipment to site
- Temporary removal of some road signage to allow oversize vehicle access.
Transportation of the equipment from the barge to site will require an oversized heavy vehicle and police escort. Traffic delays are expected - residents and visitors are encouraged to allow extra travel time when commuting around the Island.
Plant and equipment include a pre-boring drilling rig, a drilling rig, and a service crane.

What works are coming up?
Townsville City Council will be undertaking fencing reinstatement works adjacent to Lakeside Drive, between Oonoonba Road and Lakeland Boulevard in Idalia.
These works are part of Council’s commitment to maintaining safe and attractive public infrastructure and respond to community feedback following the removal of the original fence in early 2024.
What will the works include?
As part of this project, Council will:
- construct a new, 2.4-meter-high, timber fence spanning approximately 316 meters
- undertake site remediation to ensure the new fence integrates with the surrounding environment

Townsville City Council plans to renew the pipework, liners, and associated infrastructure of three wastewater pump stations in Condon, Burdell, and Railway Estate.
This program of works will extend the service life of the existing infrastructure and enhance the reliability and efficiency of the city's wastewater network.
We anticipate work at each site to take three (3) to four (4) months to complete:
- Seventh Street – three (3) months
- Bowhunters Road – three (3) months
- Kayleen Court – four (4) months.
As part of these works, Council will:
- supply and install replacement sewerage pipework and concrete structures
- rehabilitate sewer infrastructure
- restore any disturbed area upon completion of the work.

Project Update - October 2025
Construction works at the Castle Hill site were successfully completed by the contractor on 1 October 2025. Progress continues at the Stanley Street Cutting, with completion anticipated by mid-December.
Following recent pre-wet and post-wet season inspections of Townsville inner city slope stability, Townsville City Council plans to undertake rockfall protection and slope stabilisation remedial works along the Stanley Street cutting.
This project is part of Council's ongoing management of the heritage reserve and an outcome of our Castle Hill Reserve Emergency Management Plan (CHREMP).
The CHREMP describes the processes and controls designed to ensure Council's compliance with its statutory obligations and to mitigate the risk of identified hazards to people, property, and the natural environment.
Council is preparing to commence works on Stanley Street on Friday 8 August 2025. This will involve closure of the road at the Stanley Street cutting.
As part of these works, Council will:
- remove unstable portions of the slope
- shape the remaining slope to a consistent grade
- install rock dowels, soil nails and rockfall mesh
- apply shotcrete as required.

Townsville City Council is undertaking sewer pipe and maintenance hole inspections of the network in locations throughout Railway Estate.
This program allows Council to undertake condition assessments as part of our network maintenance strategy. The data collected by these surveys will allow Council to plan for future rehabilitation and replacement work.
Council has appointed Interflow Pty Ltd to carry out this project on our behalf.
To proceed with these works, Interflow may require access to clean the sewer maintenance hole and the associated wastewater pipeline within and adjacent to your property boundary.
Interflow will advise you via a letter drop if access is required into your property.
As part of this project, Council will:
- inspect sewer pipe and maintenance holes with CCTV camera surveys
- clean and flush sewers and underground pipework by jetting
- restore any disturbed area upon works completion.

Townsville City Council is preparing to commence a sewer diversion project along Whitehouse Street.
The project is to replace aging infrastructure that is no longer accessible to maintain. The work will increase resilience of the sewer network during wet weather.

- use heavy machinery for excavation of road shoulder
- construct sewer manholes and pipework
- re-instate road sub-grade and road pavement

Council is continuing flooding and drainage improvement upgrades along Winifred Street.
With the first stage of the intersection work now complete, the project is progressing to the second stage: preliminary preloading works along the Ross River riverbank.
This project is part of Council’s stormwater Capital Works program, designed to address and improve drainage across Council’s networks, and raise the quality of life for residents.
As part of this project, Council will:
- establish a temporary path connecting Winifred Street to the Ross River to maintain pedestrian access
- establish a temporary track for construction vehicles
- remove approved trees and vegetation to enable construction access
- reinstate temporary vegetation upon completion of preloading activities in preparation for the final stage of the project
- undertake permanent vegetation replacement upon construction completion.

Parks and Playgrounds

Council is now in the final stages of planning the delivery of new public amenities block at Aplins Weir Rotary Park, Mundingburra. The facility will include one accessible toilet cubicle and associated infrastructure, developed in alignment with commitments made during the 2024 Queensland Government Elections.
This initiative reflects the Queensland Government’s dedication to supporting enhancements to existing or future Council infrastructure to better meet the identified needs of the community.
What will the works include?
As part of this project, Council will:
- construct a fit-for-purpose single accessible toilet block and associated power, sewer, and water connections
- installation of a new pathway connecting the new facility, demolition of the existing aged facility, minor landscaping, and site remediation works
- preliminary on-site investigation work undertaken by the contractor.

Council is now in the final stages of planning the delivery of new playground equipment and associated infrastructure at Oonoonba Park, Oonoonba, following damage caused by vandals who set fire to the previous equipment last year.
This initiative reflects Council’s commitment to providing parks, sporting fields and recreational space that enhance the health, wellbeing and enjoyment of our community.
As part of this project, Council will:
- remove the existing playground, rubber surfacing, and any remaining shade sail pieces or fire debris
- install like-for-like replacement playground equipment, including rubber softfall and concrete edging
- install a replacement shade sail along with landscaping and site remediation works.

Council is continuing the renewal of this open space with the installation of a new junior play area, picnic tables, shade structures and landscaping at Riverside Green in Douglas.
To facilitate progress on this renewal project, please be advised that the main off-leash dog park will be temporarily closed as indicated below.
Short-term closure of the main off-leash dog park will commence on Monday 15 December 2025 and is expected to take three (3) days to complete. Short-term closures will be in effect 24 hours a day, Monday through to Wednesday.
Please be advised that the senior playground adjacent to these works will need to be temporarily closed for a short period to allow remediation of the playground’s softfall ground covering. Once complete the playground will re-open for full community use.
Short-term closure of the senior playground will commence on Friday, 19 December 2025 and is expected to take one (1) day to complete, Short-term closures will be in effect from 6am to 6pm Friday.
This project is part of Council’s commitment to providing parks, sporting fields, recreational areas, and inspirational gardens that enhance the health, wellbeing and enjoyment of our community.
As part of the dog park closures, council will:
- install two fit-for-purpose shelters and associated furniture on the concrete slabs that were laid within the first closure.
As part of the senior playground closure, Council will:
- remove and replace damaged sections of the playground softfall within the senior playground area.

Townsville City Council will be undertaking works at The Green (AFL and cricket field) in North Shore. The works entail the replacement of the existing picket fence with a new perimeter fence and completing a tree root assessment to install a root barrier system where required.
These works form part of Council’s commitment to maintaining safe and attractive public infrastructure, in alignment with Council’s fencing renewal maintenance program.
What will the works include?
As part of this project Council, will:
- remove existing picket fence
- install new perimeter fence approximately 500 meters
- assessment of tree roots and installation of a root barrier system where required.

Council is undertaking roadworks within the Charles Street and Lindeman Avenue roundabout in Cranbrook.
Please be advised that, due to external project needs and road corridor permit requirements, the commencement of this project is now scheduled to commence on the 03rd December 2025.
This project is part of Council’s annual Roadworks program, which aims to maintain our Council controlled road network to ensure the community’s transportation needs are adequately met and continue to support the growth of our region.
What will the works include?
As part of this project, Council will:
- remove and replace the road pavement with new asphalt
- painting road markings and installation of reflective markers or signage
What does this mean for me?
If you work in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:
- construction machinery and vehicle movement
- increased levels of dust, noise, and vibrations
- temporary traffic changes, including lane closures, minor traffic delays, bus stop relocations and reduced speed limits
- road resurfacing will be completed first, followed by a brief pause before line marking begins. Construction crews will not always be on-site

What works are coming up?
Townsville City Council is preparing to commence guard rail reflector reinstatement works on Ewen Jones Bridge, Ingham Road. These works will include the temporary road closure of a section of Ingham Road that stretches from Mather Street to Duckworth Street, Garbutt.
Road closure between Mather Street and Duckworth Street to be put in place from 3am until 2pm Tuesday 9 December.

Council will be carrying out work to upgrade the intersection of Jones Road and No Name Road at Woodstock. Delivered by civil contractor BMD Constructions, this is part of enabling infrastructure works for the Lansdown Eco-industrial Precinct.
As a result of this work, the road configuration at this intersection will be permanently changed to allow the safe and efficient operation of traffic into and out of the precinct from Jones Road.
Works will include:
- permanent reprioritisation of traffic travelling westbound along Jones Road turning into No Name Road
- upgrading the existing section of Jones Road between No-Name Road and west of the Ergon Substation
- upgrading drainage to maintain surface water flow
- formalising access to three properties connected to Jones Road

Update (21 August 2025):
Council will commence utility upgrades along Murray Street from Tuesday 2 September 2025, beginning with the sewer main near the intersection with Gregory Street, North Ward. Works will take place within the drainage easement adjacent to the new Murray Street culvert and will not impact on regular traffic flow. This is expected to take six (6) weeks to complete.
With culvert works now complete, Townsville City Council still plans to undertake roadworks and utility service upgrades along Murray Street, between Gregory and Stokes Streets, North Ward.
However, in the interest of safety, this stage of the project is on pause as Council prioritises slope remediation works along Stanley Street and Castle Hill Road before the next wet season.
Preliminary works will commence from November 2025. Construction crews may not be on-site full-time while we undertake preliminary works.
Roadworks are anticipated to commence from March 2026. Works are expected to take three (3) months to complete, weather permitting.
We will provide you with more information regarding these emergent works soon.

These works form part of the enabling infrastructure for the Lansdown Eco‑Industrial Precinct and will be delivered by civil contractor BMD Constructions.

- Applying the final road seal to the existing section of No Name Road.
- Extending pavement from the existing section of No Name Road south to Bidwilli Road.
- Constructing new road pavement from DriveIt NQ along Ghost Gum Road to No Name Road.

- Installing new culverts and drainage structures to improve stormwater flow.

Council’s Principal Arborist recently conducted an inspection of all trees located along the road and pathway corridors within the suburban catchment area of Kirwan.

prevent obstruction of streetlights or hazards to roadways and pedestrian walkways and support the long-term health of our urban tree canopy.
