Gulliver and Hugh Streets Active Transport Facilities Upgrade – Stage One
Townsville City Council plans to upgrade active transport facilities along Gulliver and Hugh Streets between Woolcock Street and Ross River Road. The active transport facilities upgrade intends to improve the safety, efficiency, and functionality of Gulliver and Hugh Streets for pedestrians and cyclists. This project forms part of Council's annual Roadworks program, which aims to maintain or improve our Council controlled road network. The program ensures our community's connectivity needs are met and continues to support the growth of our region.
Council will deliver this project in stages:
- Stage One – Palmerston Street to Ross River Road (eastern side)
- Stage Two – Ross River Road to Palmerston Street (western side)
- Stage Three – Palmerston Street to Woolcock Street (western side)
- Stage Four – Woolcock Street to Palmerston Street (eastern side)
As part of these works Council will construct 2.5km of 2.5m-wide shared pathway, 1.5m-wide footpath sections and line mark on-road bicycle lanes.
Additionally, we will:
- install raised priority crossings at minor road intersections
- install a signalised SMART pedestrian crossing near the Wellington Street intersection
- remove eight trees as illustrated on the map provided
- replace sections of existing driveways reconstruct driveways, driveway crossovers, and associated kerb and channel
- construct concrete medians, cycle and pedestrian ramps.
If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:
- construction machinery and vehicle movement
- increased levels of dust, noise, and vibrations
- temporary traffic changes, including lane closures, minor traffic delays and reduced speed limits.

Project funded by Townsville City Council.
