Townsville City Council will host a practical workshop next week that explores fitness options for the ageing adult.

The Physical Activity for Older People workshop, to be held at Townsville Stadium in Murray, will look at the benefits of exercise in reducing the risks of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

It will also look at exercise as a way to improve balance, reduce the risk of falls and improve blood pressure.

Community Health and Environment Committee chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said age was no barrier to exercise.

“People of all ages can participate in exercise, it’s just a matter of tailoring a program to suit the physical needs of the person,” Cr Greaney said.

“Council encourages all residents to be active and healthy and this workshop is a great way to get involved and learn about the benefits of exercise.”

The workshop presented by owner and CEO of The College of Health and Fitness explores the types of exercise suitable to the ageing adult and explains the physiological changes that occur in the ageing process.

Participants will need to wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for exercise.

A towel and water bottle are also essential.

The workshop will be held from 9am to 12pm on Tuesday, August 16.
