Fresh approach to community garden

A community garden in Railway Estate will be run more collaboratively to benefit residents and community groups.

Council’s Community and Culture Committee today accepted a recommendation to establish a new management model for the garden located at 131 Robertson St.

The new model includes establishing a Community Garden Management Committee to oversee the garden’s operations and work with council to ensure best management of facilities.

“The Railway Estate garden is a great idea that was established in 2001 to encourage the community to grow produce in a shared space,” Cr Blom said.

“Revamping the management model will ensure it continues to provide opportunities for the local community to come together.

“The new model is the culmination of a considerable amount of work by the council and users of the gardens to establish a fair and efficient way of managing the garden.

“Under the new model, Townsville Community Garden Incorporated will manage use of the garden and liaise with individuals and community groups.

“This fresh approach will make the facility inclusive to all members of the community with a focus on building capacity, fostering skills and relationships and promoting environmental sustainability.”

The garden currently has a database of 10 individual plot holders and eight organisational plot holders.

Cr Blom said it was envisaged that upon incorporation, the Townsville Community Garden Inc would enter into lease arrangements with council.

The type of lease arrangement is yet to be determined, as are the responsibilities of both parties and the criteria around compliance with the use of space.

Today’s recommendation will go to the full council meeting on February 23 for consideration.
