SES information session for new recruits

The call is out for new recruits to boost the ranks of Townsville’s State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

An information night will be held at 7pm, Wednesday, February 17 at the Reid Park complex to outline what’s involved in being a volunteer.

Mayor Jenny Hill, also chair of the Townsville Local Disaster Management Group, said the role of the SES was incredibly valuable to the city’s disaster management strategy.

“In the event of a disaster, SES volunteers are often some of the first people on the ground to support our community and help to get the city back on its feet in the aftermath,” Cr Hill said.

“The SES is a volunteer organisation designed to help the community in times of emergencies and disasters and they need people to come forward to assist.

“It’s a valuable opportunity to give back to the community and learn new skills.

“I would encourage residents to come to the information night to get involved in this valuable service.”

SES Area controller for the Northern Region, Sally Bloomfield said volunteering was a rewarding experience.

“Volunteers come from all walks of life and bring many different skills, interests and backgrounds. They are ordinary people, doing extraordinary things, who are united by the purpose of supporting their communities in times of need,” Ms Bloomfield said.

“If you want to meet new people and forge new friendships, gain valuable skills and training that are nationally recognised and make a difference to lives of others then the SES is looking for you. Come and meet our volunteers and find out more about who we are and what we do.”

People aged between 16 and 65 can apply and if successful will be trained in a range of skills and receive professional training including skills for rescue, disaster operations management, search techniques, leadership and team building.
