Cenotaph on the move

Townsville City Council will seek community views on a new location for the Thuringowa Cenotaph.

A report to council’s Community and Cultural Development Committee this morning outlined public space surrounding the memorial would be limited should the Thuringowa Civic Centre be sold as previously proposed.

Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said it was important to ensure consultation with the community and organisations including the RSL took place before a new site was chosen.

“Thuringowa residents have turned out in their thousands for remembrance services at the cenotaph in recent years,” Cr Doyle said.

“If current numbers are anything to go by, we need to plan now for a time when crowds for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day grow beyond the capacity at Dan Gleeson Gardens.

“Community consultation will ensure we get the location right for those visiting the cenotaph for major ceremonial events as well as for quiet reflection.”

Relocation costs have been estimated at $45,000. The recommendation will go to full council later this month for endorsement.
