Townsville residents asked to have their say on new Liveability Strategy

Townsville City Council is inviting the community to have their say on the new Liveability Strategy after thousands of residents took part in a Liveability Study earlier this year.

The strategy is available on the Have Your Say Townsville platform from today for comments before it is formally adopted by Council.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said this strategy is a guiding document that ensures Council’s projects align with the community values outlined in the survey.

“The Liveability Survey was an effective way of gauging what the community both wants and needs into the future,” Cr Hill said.

“This strategy outlines our strengths as a city, but also what we can do moving forward to improve liveability and satisfaction among residents.

“Improving our cities liveability needs a long-term commitment from Council that includes a focus on land-use, the environment, infrastructure investment and community development.

“That’s why it’s important the community has the chance to provide feedback on the draft strategy before we adopt it and use this to guide Council’s projects moving forward.”

More than 2600 people responded to the liveability survey with some of the top care factors including our natural environment, neighbourhood and personal safety, the condition of our open spaces and access to transport.

Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said that the Liveability Survey was critical in providing Council with evidence-backed priorities from a large percentage of the community.

“The survey itself was a huge success because we’ve been able to capture data from quite a large cross-section of the city and that gives us a lot of data to work with,” Cr Walker said.

“This strategy was designed with that data and allows Council to invest and plan for projects that align with these community values in mind.

“It’s great to see a large number of projects already underway or scheduled to begin soon that will go a long way to addressing these priorities and I’m looking forward to seeing what else we can do in the future.”
