Council to reduce flood risk in Laura Court

Townsville City Council has approved a $300,000 project to help prevent flooding in Deeragun.
The project will move the outlet of the Hank Street drainage system further downstream to reduce flooding in Laura Court.
The area was flooded during heavy rainfall last February.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the project is an important investment for Council.
“The stormwater system in the area was upgraded in 2014 but last February showed flooding still happens in Laura Court,” Cr Hill said.
“We have listened to the concerns of residents and we are committed to improving the situation as much as we can.
“My team of Councillors is totally dedicated to deliver essential infrastructure upgrades right across our community – and that’s why we are spending nearly $400 million on capital projects this financial year.”
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said the works should reduce the flooding in Laura Court.
“This will realign the outlet in the direction of the water flow,” Cr Molachino said.
“It will reduce the flow of water from the road to Saunders Creek, which currently occurs through the properties at the end of Laura Court.”
Cr Molachino said the project should reassure residents.
“The 2014 upgrade was part of the Coles development and these works will reduce the perceived issues with that drainage upgrade,” Cr Molachino said.
“Council has reviewed previous flood studies for the area and assessed all the potential flood mitigation options.”
The project will reduce local drainage and flooding issues but may not prevent properties from being inundated if the Saunders Creek has a major flood.
