Date published: 5 February 2024

Citylibraries Aitkenvale has reopened its doors today after it was damaged from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily.

The library has been closed since the cyclone impacted the region and caused moderate damage to the roof causing it to leak.

A Townsville City Council spokesperson said the library was one of the most popular in the city.

“Citylibraries Aitkenvale is very popular with families because its where we deliver a lot of programs around children, health and homework,” they said.

“Thankfully, the only damage was to the roof, with no books or resources getting damaged.

“It is good news for the community that the repairs have happened so quickly, and the users will no doubt be looking forward to using the library again.”

Citylibraries Aitkenvale is one of three operated by Council and has facilities to read and borrow books, use a computer or to record podcasts.

Through Citylibraries, Council is committed to being a facilitator and offer gathering spaces to bring the community together. Citiibraries provides access to information and resources, supports literacy and education, and promotes lifelong learning.

A range of programs are also run out of the library, including Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, One to One Tech sessions and more.
